✪ Day 2 : Zagora desert » Ouarzazate » Atlas Mountains » Marrakech :

A sight to behold, sunrise over the desert dunes on waking. After breakfast you will take another camel trek for 1 hour from the Zagora desert camp, to meet your guide and vehicle. Your journey will now take you along the Draa Valley via Agdz. The Draa Valley is a stunning Oasis, home to Berber villages along the Draa River, Morocco’s longest river. The river meandered west to the Atlantic coast in ancient times. This area has thousands of years of ancient history which you will explore with your driver guide. Currently the valley is a mix of sand dunes, green fertile plains, river and palm trees.

A visit to the Kasbah Taourirt, famous citadel, situated against a backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. It is a large fortified Kasbah with several hundred rooms; was built in 19th century by the Glaoui family, who had significant powers over the southern caravan routes to West Africa. One family member was Thami el Glaoui known as Lord of The Atlas and was the notable Pasha of Marrakech in 1912 to 1956.

He is remembered for his role during French colonial rule in Morocco, which was to aid France in overpowering Sultan Mohammed V. His large extended family have lived in and maintained Kasbah Taourirt. Unesco has supported the restoration of parts of the Kasbah.

There is a stop at one of the famous cinema studios in Ouarzazate for photo opportunities, and is known as ”The Hollywood of Africa”, where many international movies were filmed, i.e. Gladiator, Indiana Jones, Jewel of the Nile…

Ouarzazate attracted world attention in 2016, when the first stage of the world’s largest concentrated thermal solar power plant began operating. This expensive installation includes much needed storage and has been funded, mostly, by The World Bank, at a cost of 3.9 billion USD.

You will return to Marrakech after lunch, by way of Tizi n’ Tichka pass, over the High Atlas Mountains. These mountain peaks are covered with snow much of the year. The mountain range stretches c. 2,500 KM (1,600 miles) through Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The range’s highest peak is Toubkal, at an elevation of 4,167 metres (13,671 ft). You will be captivated by the landscape along the meandering roads through Berber villages. Return to Marrakech, you will be taken to your Hotel / Riad, as the tour ends.
